Build a route list before comparing homes

List the trips that happen repeatedly, not only the primary workplace. Include schools or caregiving when relevant to your stated needs, medical appointments, airports, recreation, and the people or places you visit most. Test each route at realistic times in both directions.

  • Use DART’s trip planner for current transit options.
  • Use NTTA tools for toll-route planning and current information.
  • Use DriveTexas and local project pages for live construction context.
  • Repeat the test after a home becomes a serious option; do not rely on a saved screenshot.

Plano transit includes a changing regional network

DART maintains current station, rail, bus, fare, and trip-planning information. The Silver Line began service on October 25, 2025; use DART’s current Silver Line page rather than older project materials that describe it in future tense.

A station’s presence on a map does not establish door-to-door convenience. Test first/last-mile access, parking, transfers, service hours, mobility needs, and the full trip you would make.

Use employer lists as context, not a job guarantee

Plano Economic Development publishes leading-employer, key-industry, and site-selection information. These sources explain the city’s employment base, but employer presence, office policies, hiring, and vacancies can change. Use a company’s own career site for current opportunities and verify the work location before building a move around it.

Questions that produce a better commute comparison

  • What time would you actually leave and return?
  • Which route alternatives are acceptable if the usual road is disrupted?
  • Would transit, toll roads, cycling, walking, or a hybrid schedule materially change the decision?
  • Is the employer location fixed, hybrid, or subject to change?
  • How much weekly travel time feels responsible when compared with the housing tradeoff?
